Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the son of the deposed former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and Zunaid Ahmed Palak, the former State Minister for Information and Communication Technology, are set to face trial at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT). The charges stem from the July Mass Uprising, where they are accused of complicity in organized killings by facilitating the shutdown of internet services. According to sources from the Tribunal, the investigation against the two has been concluded by the prosecution, and the process to file formal charges is underway.Furthermore, the prosecution is preparing to file formal charges in a separate case against Anisul Huq and Salman F Rahman. Evidence allegedly suggests that these two advised all killings, including the systematic elimination of protesters by imposing a curfew to suppress the movement.
During the uprising, internet services were repeatedly shut down. Specifically, mobile internet was completely suspended from midnight on July 17 until July 28. Additionally, internet-based communication platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp were blocked for 13 consecutive days, only returning to normal on the afternoon of August 5. The prosecution alleges this was a deliberate and calculated move intended to disrupt communication among ordinary people and protesters, thereby aiding the organized killings. The formal charges in both cases are expected to be filed on Thursday (December 4) or next week.
